Greatham Bridge Closure

Tuesday – pm.

I have just spoken with the West Sussex Highways (Approx 11.am) The bridge will be closed for, probably, more than two weeks, up to eight weeks. The basic structure is OK, but the heat from the fire has gone down some way into the base of the carriageway. It is a “historic structure” so various permissions have to be granted, but WSCC Highways have noted it as a “Priority 1” task. They cannot police it, so if you take a car across, it being “closed” your insurance would not cover any damage caused. You can check this closure progress on “Causeway One.network” – search for Greatham Bridge. It will now appear closed on Sat Navs. They will be re-surfacing the full length of the original bridge from the approach from Coldwaltham to the metal structure 2/3 way across; they will also be repairing/clearing the drains. It has a Ref No: PJ07210031610-01.

The PC received this note from Highways today. They intend that the road be closed, depending on their inspection today – they note that it might be “until further notice”.

“Good evening,

I have been informed by our contractor that due to an RTC and subsequent vehicle fire on Greatham Bridge, Greatham Lane, Parham, the road has been closed until further notice (see attached picture).  Given the nature of the damage, the site will need to be assessed by engineers at the earliest opportunity next week before we can consider what remedial works are required (taking account of the heritage status of the bridge) and hence when we might be able to re-open the road.

We will provide further updates once the site has been inspected on Monday.  If there are any issues in the meantime, please respond to this email.
