The Traffic Reduction Order (TRO) Speed reduction.

We have put this up on the Residants Facebook Page, so this is the same. Both links work OK – and are easy to follow; but remember to take a note of the formal name and the code number to log your views.

It is really important that we get a good response – it will make life quieter and safer.

Please support our new speed limits

For too long, the A29 has cut Coldwaltham, Watersfield and Hardham in two. Getting around can be unsafe and unpleasant, with cars, vans, lorries and motorbikes speeding through. But that’s due to change. In early 2027, WSCC Highways starts a programme of improvements designed to make things better for everyone.

A reminder of what’s coming

  • A new 20mph zone in Coldwaltham, centred on St James’ School
  • The 30mph zone extended – north to Coldwaltham Rail Bridge and south to Bury Gate
  • A new 40mph limit between Pulborough and Coldwaltham
  • Better speed limit signage on roadsides and on the road surface
  • New visual features to encourage lower speeds
  • New ‘village gateways’ at Coldwaltham, Hardham and Watersfield

This won’t reduce the traffic or stop all speeding, but it should make things safer – and feel very different. Crossing the road becomes easier, drivers have more time to react, and the village becomes a nicer place to walk, cycle and horse-ride – and get to amenities and meet friends.

The first step

Before work begins, WSCC announce the speed limit changes in a Traffic Regulation Order (‘TRO’), for public comment. We need your help to show that our community wants safer roads.

Our ask of you

Please go the WSCC Highways TRO webpage: https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/traffic-regulation-orders/live-consultations-for-permanent-tros/horsham-live-tro-consultations/ and leave a short comment supporting the scheme. It only takes a few minutes. Alternative short URL is https://tinyurl.com/TROCold. Just click comment on an order, ‘Continue without an account’ and enter the scheme name “Coldwaltham, Bury and Fittleworth A29 and adjoining roads” and Ref Number HOR-8015-RC when asked.  Please comment by 20th August.

Lower speeds save lives

Drivers have more time to react, stopping distances reduce, and collisions – if they happen – are less severe:

  • Someone struck by a vehicle at 20mph has a much higher chance of surviving than someone struck at 30mph. And 30mph is safer than 40mph.
  • Rural roads are dangerous – especially national speed limit roads like the A29 to Pulborough. In a head-on crash at 60mph, sadly, very few will walk away. But at 40mph, most will survive.
  • If you’re concerned about longer journey times, please don’t be. Coldwaltham to Pulborough at 40mph adds less than 20 seconds to a typical journey – a small price to pay for safety!

Thanks for reading – please support the TRO
